I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT LIFE'S MEANT TO BE EXTRAORDINARY...
But, as time ticked by, the status quo became my 'norm' (and my comfort zone), and soon I was questioning whether my life would ever turn out like I dreamed it would.
Do you ever feel that way? Hear me out…
I graduated with a Master’s Degree from the most prestigious University in South Africa, I just didn’t feel like I was meant to stay. I felt destined to live the American Dream, but society definitely didn’t support my wishes.
WHILE I KEPT STRIVING FOR MY DREAMS, EVERYONE SAID I WAS BEING “UNREALISTIC” AND, WORSE, THAT MY DREAMS WERE "IMPOSSIBLE."
Thankfully, I didn’t listen!
But, after getting what I wanted – my green card (AKA, the right to live in the United States) – I started to wonder if society had in fact been right... I was living in Hawai’i, scrambling to get by.
There I was – the determined girl with a Master’s Degree – juggling two jobs that paid just $10 an hour. I could barely pay the rent on my tiny Waikiki studio, so I succumbed to living off of $1 hot dogs and 99¢ ABC Store coffee.
My reality was devastating to my dreams.
Worse, part of my retail jobs entailed cleaning the store display mirrors, and each day, as I sparkled the mirrors I had to stare back at myself and realize how little I was sparkling.
I FELT LOST, ALONE AND DESPERATELY UNFULFILLED.
But I wasn’t the kind of girl to give up. In my heart I knew that life was meant to be fabulous, I just didn’t quite know how to make that happen.
So, I decided to do the only thing I knew worked – exactly what I had done to get from Africa to living in the U.S.A. in the first place – believe my dreams were possible, visualize them, and consume every self-help book and video available to me.
I imagined myself working a high-profile corporate job with a very specific annual salary. I envisioned the success I’d have, the clothes I’d wear, and the accomplishment I’d feel. I rehearsed that role in my mind each day as I cleaned mirrors, and I began to see myself differently.
And then I took action.
I took my ABC store coffee down to the beach and wrote. I wrote and wrote. I wrote on the bus to work, I wrote at the gym, I wrote late in the evenings and before sunrise. Then I pitched my work to an online paper, was accepted to be a contributer, and...continued to write.
And then it happened – my writing caught the eye of an Account Director at a global resort chain and two months later I was in charge of marketing Hawai’i’s most prestigious hotel (earning the exact amount I had envisioned, and not a dollar less!)
During my time in Hawai'i, I went on to become a global social media trainer and co-create the social media best practice manual for the renowned resort chain I worked for. I edited two locally celebrated books, featured in numerous local magazines, and become a certified trainer. Life was good, but...
I knew I was meant for more.
After meeting the man of my dreams and relocating to Colorado, I continued to balance my corporate career with a strong desire for something more.
I was successful in the traditional sense, but not fulfilled. Don't get me wrong – I'm forever grateful for the opportunities I've been granted – I just felt there had to be more to life than working a 9-5, waiting for pay day, and pretending to be satisfied with just two weeks of vacation time each year.
So while I put my understanding of marketing and customer aquistition to great use by day, working for multi-million dollar corporations and achieving record sales numbers, I continued to write by night.
I thought blogging would enable me to launch my own business. It didn't work, but it did lead me to become a Best Selling Author, and teach me that no effort is ever in vain. Still, it wasn't enough.
I felt called for more – I just didn't know how to package my passions into my dream business.
I dabbled for years. I followed successful women on social media hoping to learn their secrets. I listened to every webinar I saw advertised, I downloaded every freebie I came across, and tried and tried to launch my business on my own. Nothing worked!
Finally I'd had enough. I reached what I now call the 'insanity point' and realized if I truly wanted to achieve a different result, I had to do something drastically different to what I'd been doing.
And really when I think about it, it wasn't that drastic at all - truthfully it was quite logical - I invested in a coach who had already accomplished what I dreamed of.
And that's when everything changed. I took my business from hobby-status to up and running in just 90 Days.
I went from dreaming my dreams to actually living them!
Imagine if I’d given up? I’d probably still be cleaning mirrors... What are you not going to give up on?
